9. Spider-Man: The Gauntlet, Book 2 (Rhino & Mysterio)
A few years ago, Marvel gave Spider-Man a reboot of sorts by wiping his marriage to Mary Jane Watson out of continuity. They also introduced a number of new villains, giving his regular foes a break for a couple of years. However, the majority were brought back – all with a new look or motivation –in a storyline called “The Gauntlet”. While each arc relies on Peter Parker’s history with these bad guys, they also serve as a good way for new fans to be introduced to them as well. In “Rage of The Rhino” (a character played by Paul Giamatti in The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Aleksei Sytsovich has given up a life of crime and now lives with his new wife, Oksana. However, when a new Rhino attacks him and his wife dies in the process, he turns back to a life of crime, telling Spider-Man: “All of this happened because I pretended to be something I am not. I will never forgive you.”
