Overall, 2014 was a pretty good year for superhero movies. Though The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sticks out as the most divisive, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy would prove that Marvel Studios could do no wrong. Meanwhile X-Men: Days of Future Past exceeded everyone’s expectations and set the franchise back on the right path following a few misfires before The Wolverine was released.
However, that doesn’t mean that they all got everything right, so we’ve decided to take a closer look at five of the best and worst moments from this year’s Marvel movies (it’s going to be a couple more years before we’re able to include DC Comics characters in a feature like this). Some aren’t specific moments, but are instead characters or certain story decisions, and we’d like to hear your thoughts on them all below.
Needless to say, there are potentially major spoilers for all of 2014’s superhero movies follow…
5. “Ooga Chaka, Ooga Chaka!”
Forget superhero movies, Guardians of the Galaxy had one of the best soundtracks of any movie released this year. Director James Gunn made sure the music served the story, and that arguably played a big role in why the Marvel Studios release many predicted would be their first flop is actually one of the best reviewed of the year and also a hit at the box office.
Gunn found a great use for each track, regardless of whether it was the beautiful shot of Star-Lord blasting through space to The Pina Colada Song, one of the most enjoyable opening credits sequences ever set to Redbone’s Come and Get Your Love or a scene featuring The Jackson 5 which we’ll talk more about a little later. Gunn has indicated that the sequel may not put as much emphasis on music, but with the soundtrack heading to #1, you have to imagine that changing.
