In the comic books, the death of any character has become something of a cliché, with fans realising that it’s really only a matter of time before whoever has been killed off returns in a grand fashion.
Captain America, Batman and Spider-Man are all recent examples, and for a number of years, there was an unspoken rule that three characters who would ALWAYS stay dead were Uncle Ben, Gwen Stacy and Bucky. The latter two still are, but even Cap’s sidekick was brought back from the dead as The Winter Soldier!
In the movies, it’s rare that a leading character is done away with (after all, it’s a little hard to sell Spider-Man merchandise if he’s not in his own sequel), but it does happen!
Here, we count down ten of the best death scenes from our favourite superhero movie releases, although you should bear in mind that there obviously some major spoilers ahead for a lot of recent films…
10. Jean Grey (X2: X-Men United)
Ah, what could have been! When Bryan Singer left the X-Men franchise behind for Superman, his plans were left in the hands of those who couldn’t utilise them anywhere near as well, so his version of the Dark Phoenix Saga remains unseen.
Regardless, Jean Grey’s death in the closing moments of X2: X-Men United admittedly packed an emotional wallop, but was made most memorable by the hints of what was to come as we glimpsed the silhouette of a Phoenix in the water after Jean sacrificed herself to save her teammates.
Also particularly satisfying was the fact that Jean chose Cyclops, her true love from the comics, and not Wolverine. Many fans have questioned the need for this particular love triangle over the years, so seeing her make what the majority view as the “right” decision during her emotional death scene help to make Jean’s death a stand out moment in this superhero series.
