Following last year’s unfairly overlooked release of Chappie, we got to thinking about some of the other great examples of Artificial Intelligence in movies over the years. Once a very far-fetched concept, many A.I.s are now alarmingly close to becoming a reality. If you need further proof of that, look no further than the smartphone in your pocket.

Not every movie featuring a truly great A.I. character is a winner (just look at the mixed reviews for Chappie), but they all work for very different reasons and are more relevant now than ever before.

The advances in real-life technology means that Artificial Intelligence is as prevalent in movies today as it was back when mobile phones seemed like an impossibility; Avengers: Age of Ultron uses the concept in a big way for example.

Here are ten truly great A.I.s from the movies…

10. Blade Runner

Blade Runner

The classic Ridley Scott movie adapts Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, and is set in a dystopian version of Los Angeles in 2019. Here, Artificial Intelligence is hard to distinguish from humans as Replicants are actually made to believe they are human thanks to some false implanted memories. They only have a four year lifespan, and seeing the different types of Replicants was one of the most fascinating aspects of Blade Runner.

Whether or not Harrison Ford’s Deckard was also one of these unique A.I.s has been hotly debated for decades now, and some definitive answers should come in the recently announced sequel. Scott says yes, but Ford says no. Either way, this is a great example of Artificial Intelligence, and one we’re going to revisit very soon…
