Taking home the Grand Jury Prize and the Cinematography Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival back in January, Beasts of the Southern Wild has naturally drawn considerable attention and praise for such a promising debut film from director and co-writer Benh Zeitlin, co-writing the script with Lucy Alibar.

The first trailer has now debuted, courtesy of Apple, along with the first poster for the film, which is due out in the US this summer.

“In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee, a six-year-old girl exists on the brink of orphanhood. Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary imagination, she believes that the natural world is in balance with the universe until a fierce storm changes her reality. Desperate to repair the structure of her world in order to save her ailing father and sinking home, this tiny hero must learn to survive unstoppable catastrophes of epic proportions.”

The two young leads come in the form of Quvenzhané Wallis and Dwight Henry, both of whom make their debuts as well with this film, with much praise too falling at their feet in the reviews coming out of Sundance.

Fox Searchlight will be distributing the film in the US, and have set its release there for 27th June. As yet, no UK date has been scheduled, but here’s to hoping that we can look forward to it a little later this year. For now, here’s the trailer for your viewing pleasure, followed by the poster. Enjoy. (And if you’d like to watch the former in HD, you can head over to Apple here.)
