The dominance of superheroes has spread from the big screen to the small one, with shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Arrow, and The Flash all finding great success over the past few years. Joining them soon will be Supergirl, with US network CBS developing a series from the team of Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler.

It has been announced today that Glee and Whiplash actress Melissa Benoist will be the one to bring Supergirl to the small screen, and other past credits include the likes of Homeland and The Good Wife.

According to the official character description for this iteration of the fan-favourite DC Comics character, this version of the fan-favourite superhero was sent from her dying home planet of Krypton to Earth, where she was taken in by the Danvers, a foster family who taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers.

After repressing said skills for more than a decade, Kara is forced to bust out her super moves in public during an unexpected disaster. Energized by her heroism for the first time in her life, she begins embracing her abilities in the name of helping the people of her city, earning herself a super moniker along the way.

There have been rumours about Supergirl possibly crossing over with Arrow and The Flash, but we’ll have to wait and see. Regardless, Benoist seems like a great choice and more casting news should follow soon.
