Anything Matthew McConaughey does understandably receives a lot of attention these days, hence why there’s a tremendous amount of buzz surrounding his next movie, The Free State of Jones. Could it lead to another Oscar for the actor? Its release date takes it out of the running for this year, and while it’s unlikely to get a push in 2017, the movie still looks great!

STX Entertainment’s The Free State of Jones is set during the American Civil War, and tells the real life story of defiant Southern farmer Newt Knight (Matthew McConaughey), and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers, and with the assistance of local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones.

His marriage to a former slave, Rachel (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), and his subsequent establishment of a mixed race community was unique in the post-war South. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, which distinguished him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War. The movie’s impressive cast also includes Keri Russell, and Mahershala Ali, and is directed by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games).

The Free State of Jones is currently set to be released on March 11th, so not too long to go!
