The LEGO Movie was a box office hit earlier this year, so the fact that one of its most popular characters is now getting his own spin-off probably shouldn’t come as too huge of a surprise. However, rather than any of the new creations we met in that file, it’s a character who’s no stranger to the big screen; Batman!

Will Arnett is set to return to voice the Caped Crusader in the movie which will be directed by Chris McKay.

McKay was the animation supervisor on the first movie, and he had signed up to direct The LEGO Movie’s sequel as original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were too busy to return. However, Warner Bros. have put LEGO Batman on the fast track and it will likely take the 2017 release date originally held by the sequel.

Seth Grahame-Smith, the scribe perhaps best known for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, will write.

Perhaps the best part of this news of course is that delaying The LEGO Movie 2 means that Lord and Miller may be able to return. LEGO Batman is already an extremely popular franchise with video games, comics and even some existing direct-to-DVD movies. There’s obviously no word on plot details as of yet.

Batman will also be seen in Zack Snyder’s live-action Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, but you have to imagine that his LEGO movie will feature cameos galore from the DC Comics Universe.
