Casting for season two of True Detective continues to take an unexpected route as Vince Vaughn has emerged as a frontrunner for a lead role in the highly anticipated next batch of episodes.

When we last heard some solid True Detective casting rumours, Colin Farrell (In Bruges) was said to be in serious talks, while both Taylor Kitsch (Savages) and Garrett Hedlund (TRON: Legacy) were apparently in the running for another of the four leading roles featured in season two of the HBO drama.

It’s unclear which of these four roles Vaughn is up for, but preliminary talks have already begun.

There are still very few details in regards to the direction that the series will take when it returns, but we do know that it will be set in California and that the city’s transport system will play a major role in proceedings. Some reports claim that the three leads – reportedly two men and one woman – will be from different branches of the state government. The fourth lead is expected to be the main villain of this season.

Vaughn is of course best known for roles in comedies like Swingers, and more recently, The Delivery Man. However, a part in Nic Pizzolatto’s crime drama could send his career in a significantly different direction, something which it would arguably be very interesting to see. What do you guys think?
