Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey is a film which not only rewards multiple viewing – it demands them. Its influence on the landscape of science fiction cinema is as great as the likes of Metropolis and one of the films which grew out of its shadow, Star Wars, and the story behind the film is just as fascinating.
Introduced and narrated by James Cameron this 48 minute look at the film recounts the journey to the (very wide) screen with contributions from the cast and crew as well as Arthur C. Clarke himself. From the famous special effects to some of the ideas which never made to the finished film this is just the sort of thing you should be watching at work on Monday morning.
If you’re a fan of the film and haven’t already done so try and pick up The Lost Worlds of 2001, written by Clarke as an accompaniment to the film and includes The Sentinel, the short story which inspired the film, as well as the production and scriptwriting from his point of view.
