Rumours have been swirling about who will take the helm of Fast and Furious 8, with the most worrying possibility being franchise producer and star Vin Diesel. Thankfully, the Guardians of the Galaxy star will be remaining in front of the camera, as it has today been announced that Straight Outta Compton helmer F. Gary Gray has landed the job.

“I could not have asked for better partners than Vin Diesel, Neal H. Moritz, [and] the Universal Studios Entertainment family,” he said in a statement released via Facebook today. “Together we are excited to bring you the next chapter in the Fast & Furious saga.”

This brings an end to the rumoured behind the scenes drama which has plagued the next Fast and Furious movie. With James Wan unwilling to return to the franchise after Fast and Furious 7’s tiring shoot and Justin Lin busy with Star Trek Beyond, it looked like there may have been a chance that Universal would fail to find anyone to meet that 2017 release.

Gray of course received widespread critical acclaim for Straight Outta Compton and is no stranger to vehicular action after helming The Italian Job remake. You’re Next director Adam Wingard and The Incredible Hulk’s Louis Leterrier were among those also considered.
