Believe it or not, a reboot of the Underworld franchise is now said to be in the works. Writer and director Len Wiseman kicked off the series with the first instalment back in 2003, and that would be followed up by Underworld: Evolution in 2006, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans in 2009 and Underworld: Awakening in 2012.

The series starred Kate Beckinsale as Selene, a vampire “Death Dealer” who found herself caught in the middle of a war between vampires and Lycans. Despite never finding much success with critics, each of the movies was reasonably successful at the box office and clearly good enough for Lakeshore Entertainment to confidently move ahead with another. A reboot so soon after the last one is surprising to say the least…it’s only been two years!

Regardless, Cory Goodman (Priest) has been hired to pen the script, with Lakeshore’s Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi producing. Goodman has also written The Last Witch Hunter, a movie starring Vin Diesel.

The last Underworld movie was released in 3D and was the most successful to date with a worldwide haul of $160 million. It ended on a cliffhanger, and while the trade calls this new take on the franchise a reboot, it’s not clear whether it will be a loose follow-up or a complete do-over. Either way, it seems like we’ll get a new cast.
