Academy Award-winning director of The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, Kathryn Bigelow looks all set to deliver the high stakes yet again with her next project if the brand new trailer for Detroit is anything to go by.

Bigelow has reunited with screenwriter Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) to tell the gripping story of one of the darkest moments during the civil unrest that rocked Detroit in the summer of 1967, a story of a simple police raid resulting in one of the largest citizen uprisings in the United States history.

Starting the trailer with footage that seems to have been taken from the archives of this fateful time, we are introduced to Boyega as a US Army Marshall, on the phone, simply stating “I’ll sleep when they stop rioting” before diving into the action with what starts as a harmless conversation between a group of friends and a starting pistol to an all-out war on the streets of Detroit.

Leading the ensemble cast is The Force Awakens very own John Boyega who is joined by Will Poulter, Algee Smith, Jacob Latimore, Jason Mitchell, Hannah Murray, Kaitlyn Dever, Jack Reynor, Ben O’Toole, Joseph David Jones, Ephraim Sykes, Leon Thomas III, Nathan Davis Jr., Peyton Alex Smith, Malcolm David Kelley, Gbenga Akinnabve, Chris Chalk, Jeremy Strong, Laz Alonzo, Austin Hebert, Miguel Pimentel, Kris David, with John Krasinski and Anthony Mackie. As well as taking the helm in the director’s chair, Bigelow produced with Boal, Annapurna’s Megan Ellison and Matthew Budman, and Colin Wilson, with Greg Shapiro executive producing.

Also released alongside the trailer is the new poster for the upcoming crime drama thriller.
