It’s been a long old wait for fans of the BBC Two mini series, Top of The Lake. Today fans can rejoice with the release of a new trailer for the second installment, Top of the Lake: China Girl, also from the series creator Jane Champion. It reveals a surprising look at an aged Nicole Kidman, and much more.

The first series followed Detective Robin Griffin (Elisabeth Moss – who reprises her role in the second series), as she dealt with the investigation of the disappearance of a pregnant 12-year-old girl in New Zealand. Series two will be set four years after the events of series one and will be set in Sydney, as Robin investigates the death of an unidentified Asian girl found at Bondi Beach.

In the trailer, Robin is back in a creepy storyline, which is aided by an even more unsettling music, in which she looks to befriend a young woman in trouble as she investigates another mysterious death. We also get a glimpse at The Beguiled’s Nicole Kidman, who has been made to look at least twenty years older than her actual age both facially and donning a thick head of almost gray hair.

Elisabeth Moss stated in a Q&A session; I’ve always been a huge fan of Jane Campion, she does such incredible work, so many different kinds of things, but they always have her own sensibility about them. She is the epitome of the actor’s director so getting the opportunity to learn from her and be challenged by her has been such an incredible part of this experience. Robin is one of those incredible female roles that are really rare where you have a character who is strong and feminine, who has a lot to do and who has an incredibly emotional journey.

Ariel Kleiman replaces Gerard Lee as co-director on the production which will premiere in its entirety at Cannes this May before airing on BBC Two in the UK on the 17th of August and on Sundance in the US in September.
