Back towards the end of May, Tom Cruise finally confirmed Top Gun 2 is on the cards and since then the news on its progress has been coming in thick and fast. Today we found that not only will Oblivion and Tron’s Joseph Kosinski taking the helm of the sharpshooters of the skies but an official release date has finally been revealed.

The date, to be exact, the 12th of July 2019, so what’s another two years of waiting for the return of the ever so cool, charming and egotistical Maverick 31 years since the original hit our screens?

With Jerry Bruckheimer back in the producer’s chair, Cruise’s Maverick, who has never lost that loving feeling for his need for speed, is set to return as a flight instructor to a whole host of young Geese, Icemen and Mavericks wanting to follow in his almighty flight footsteps.

Top Gun 2

Casting has yet to be firmed up and we wait with baited breath to hear whether Val Kilmer will return as Maverick’s number one nemesis Iceman. The script is to be penned by Peter Craig and Justin Marks, along with Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz.

Kosinski made his feature film debut back in 2010 with Tron: Legacy and went on to take the helm of Oblivion working alongside Cruise and Morgan Freeman in 2013. Kosinski’s next project, Granite Mountain Hotshots, which will be released this year, is a biographical drama based on the elite crew of firefighters who battled Yarnell Hill Fire, a wildfire in Prescott, Arizona in June 2013 that claimed the lives of 19 members of their team. The film will star Jennifer Connolly, Miles Teller, Taylor Kitsch, Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin and Andie MacDowell.
