Elysium-Kick-Ass-2-Top-10-Must-See-Movies-of-August-2013July 2013 was an incredibly interesting month to watch unfold at the box office. Despicable Me 2 conquered The Lone Ranger at the month’s start, and then it did it again in week 2 by conquering newcomer Pacific Rim. Warner Bros.’ low-budget horror, The Conjuring, triumphed over DreamWorks’ Turbo and Universal’s R.I.P.D. And fortunately, The Wolverine didn’t suffer a similar fate, topping the box office as predicted at the weekend. We continued to be faced with another impressive array of choices as we head into August. So in an effort to help make those choices a little easier, here are the top 10 must-see movies of the month.

The Spectacular Now – August 2nd (US)

Having made waves with his sophomore feature, Smashed, at Sundance last year, James Ponsoldt returned to Park City with his third film, The Spectacular Now.

With Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley leading the cast, the film headed into the festival with plenty of positive buzz surrounding it, and it came out with even more. Teller and Woodley won the Special Jury Prize in the Dramatic category for their acting, and the critics had nothing but praise for Ponsoldt’s return behind the camera.

The film, written by (500) Days of Summer scribes Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, is based on the Tim Tharp novel of the same name, and will begin its limited release in the US in New York and LA this weekend, as of August 2nd, before continuing to expand in select cities from next Friday, August 9th.

Unfortunately, there’s yet to be any news on a firm UK release, but with any luck, it will head over to our shores before long. Teller and Woodley have both very much been on the rise, and are sure to continue on their upward paths in the months and years to come, with so many promising projects on their slate.

The Spectacular Now is very much one of those projects, earning its spot (and then some) as one of our top 10 must-see movies this August.

Since graduating, I spend as much time as possible watching films/TV shows, reading books, and listening to music. So getting to write about what I love is nothing short of awesome. Biggest film-related hope for 2014/ever: Guy Ritchie announcing the RocknRolla sequel is finally moving forward.
