Collette and Carell, who previously worked together on the critically acclaimed and award winning Little Miss Sunshine, will star opposite Allison Janney (The Help), Sam Rockwell (Moon) and AnnaSophia Robb (Soul Surfer) in the long-delayed comedy-drama.

The Way, Way Back follows a teenager who, over the course of the summer months, develops a friendship that allows him to escape his violent stepdad (Carell) and re-connect with his inattentive mother (Collette).

Jim Rash and Nat Faxon, part of the writing team behind last year’s The Descendants, will make their directorial debut on The Way, Way Back. The film was originally set to be helmed by Shawn Levy (Real Steel) before the 2007-2008 Writers Guide of America Strike shut down Hollywood.

Production is due to start this summer, with a late 2013 release being eyed.

Collette will next be seen in Jesus Henry Christ, while Carell stars opposite Keira Knightley in Lorene Scafaria’s apocalyptic comedy-romance Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.
