Thor star Tom Hiddleston has emerged as a clear fan-favourite choice to replace Daniel Craig as the next James Bond, and it was recently reported that he’s in “advanced talks” to take on the role. Recent BBC series The Night Manager felt almost like an audition for the actor, and at this point, the backlash if he doesn’t end up becoming 007 will be fairly significant.

It’s unfortunate then that during an appearance at Wizard World Philadelphia this weekend, Hiddleston said that it may be a little too soon for fans to start getting too excited about him suiting up as Bond: “I’m sorry to disappoint you everybody. I don’t think that announcement is coming. But I’m very gratified to hear the enthusiasm. There’s not much that I can say that I haven’t already said, but I know…your guess is as good as mine to be honest.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard an actor deny being involved with a project (remember Paul Rudd saying that reports of him playing Ant-Man were just rumours he knew nothing about?), but if Hiddleston is telling the truth, chances are he won’t be the next James Bond.

Still, with Sam Mendes confirming that he won’t return for the next instalment and The Night Manager’s Susanne Bier being eyed to direct, don’t give up yet fellow Hiddlestoners…
