Though making a remarkable impression when starring in Shane Meadows’ Dead Man Shoes, Toby Kebbell has since become more renowned for his work in blockbusters, notably in the Planet of the Apes franchise, and more recently with Fantastic Four and Warcraft. Embracing the new means of storytelling, using motion-capture, it’s a world he’s returned to yet again, this time in Kong: Skull Island, where he plays two roles.

First and foremost he is soldier Jack Chapman, but he also helped out with the character of Kong himself, telling us that he was brought in to capture the more subtle sense of emotion the character requires.

Kong: Skull Island“What I came back and did was give them the nuance of emotion, even in the roar, making sure it had some pain attached to it,” he said. “It wasn’t just the roar of a wild beast, so I think that’s the character of Kong, Kong needs to have the humanity because he’s one of the only monsters who not’s just a predator, you misjudge him, he’s the one smashing everything but then you realise he’s dealing with a huge amount.”

Kebbell also talks about the collaboration process with filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts, and whether he plans to return to the small-budget indie any time soon. Spoiler alert: he is.

Kong: Skull Island is released on March 9th. You can read our review here, and check out the rest of the interviews with the cast and crew right here.
