Some extremely sad news tonight as we learned a few hours ago of the death of Restrepo Co-director and photojournalist Tim Hetherington in the Lbyan city of Misrata.

The Oscar nominated director was covering the conflict in Misrata, where Hetherington tweeted just yesterday, “In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO.”

The news first broke on Twitter, with a Facebook post from Andre Liohn announcing that Tim Hetherington had died and photographer Chris Hondros was seriously injured. Liohn added in the comments of the post that Hondros too died moments later. The news has since been confirmed by numerous news outlets.

We were fortunate to sit down with Hetherington on the press tour for Resptrepo last year and the bravery and honesty in his words are given new weight tonight and the legacy of what he leaves behind through his award winning career are powerful and unflinching images of political struggle, the human aspect of war and the reality of fierce and constant conflict. He and his colleagues made us aware of the world few of us ever see, connecting us to the very darkest and most troubled places on Earth, inspiring and humbling us in the process.

Christopher Campbell, whose tweet lead many to discover the news, has posted two of Hetherington’s short films on his website, you can check them out here and Restrepo is fantastic film, if you haven’t done so already – be sure to see it.
