Marvel’s choice of directors never fail to surprise, and that’s definitely the case with Thor: Ragnarok. It’s been revealed today that Flight of the Conchords and What We Do in the Shadows director Taika Waititi is in talks to take the helm of the Phase 3 Marvel movie.

Kenneth Branagh directed the first instalment in 2011 and Alan Taylor took over for 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. Given his comedic background, Waititi is a surprising choice, but that certainly didn’t stop James Gunn finding success with Guardians of the Galaxy and the Russo Brothers creating one of Marvel’s best movies with Captain America: The Winter Solider!

As well as directing the movies above, Waititi also wrote Moana, the upcoming Disney animated movie starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Whether he’ll contribute in any way to Thor: Ragnarok’s screenplay is unknown, as are plot details for the July 28th, 2017 release.

We do know that Chris Hemsworth will return as Thor of course, and it’s believed that the movie will help to set up the events of the two-part Avengers: Infinity War movie. Interestingly, Waititi apparently beat Ruben Fleischer (Gangster Squad) to the coveted gig.
