The SapphiresTo take on a role in The Sapphires as one of the performers of the said band, you need to have a steady mix of being able to both act and sing – and director Wayne Blair hit the nail on the head by casting Australian actresses Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens and Miranda Tapsell – and we had the pleasure of speaking to the four ahead of the film’s release this week.

The girls take on the roles of four Aboriginal relatives who form the soul and Motown group The Sapphires, who succeed in the face of adversity, taking part in a life-threatening tour of Vietnam to entertain the troops, alongside their scout turned manager Dave (Chris O’Dowd).

The girls discuss their joy at working alongside O’Dowd, and how much this project means to them all. Mauboy – a star of Australian Idol – tells us of her move into an acting career, while Mailman – who plays eldest sister Gail – discussed her familiarity with the story, having played a part in the triumphant stage production.

Please note that the audio in this video was affected by a microphone problem – we’ve made it as good as it can possibly be.
