Wes Ball makes one of the biggest debuts of the year as the director of the anticipated adaptation, The Maze Runner, and everything teased from the film so far suggests it’s going to live up to expectations.

There was a fan screening of the film at Comic-Con over the weekend, and the early reactions were very promising. And with its September US release date fast approaching, Fox has launched a new trailer to build on the buzz already surrounding the film.

Based on the young-adult novel by James Dashner, “The Maze Runner” centers around teen Thomas (O’Brien), who awakens in a rusty elevator with no memory of who he is. What he does come to find out is that he’s been delivered to the middle of an intricate maze, along with a slew of other boys, who have been trying to find their way out of the ever-changing labyrinth — all the while establishing a functioning society within the enclosure they’ve come to call “The Glade.”

Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, and Will Poulter top the cast, starring alongside Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Ki Hong Lee, Blake Cooper, Aml Ameen, Chris Sheffield, and Patricia Clarkson.

Ball directs from a script first penned by Noah Oppenheim, with Grant Pierce Meyers doing a subsequent draft, adapting James Dashner’s novel of the same name.

The original novel is the first in a trilogy, and Ball revealed to conventiongoers over the weekend that if The Maze Runner is a hit, then the sequel, The Scorch Trials, will be looking to shoot at the end of this year. So if you want to see the rest of this universe played out, be sure to catch it on the big screen when it lands.

The Maze Runner will be released in the US on September 19th, before crossing the Atlantic for an October 10th UK release. In case you missed it, be sure to catch up on Stefan’s recent interview with Ball, who talks about his newfound respect for all filmmakers.
