Top-Gun-3D-IMAX-PosterMore than twenty-five years after its original release, the late Tony Scott’s classic ’80s movie, Top Gun, will be returning to theatres next month in an all-new form: Top Gun 3D.

We saw the first trailer for the IMAX 3D release of the film earlier in the month, seeing Tom Cruise light up the skies once more. And with a week and a half to go before Top Gun 3D hits, the IMAX poster for the six-day event has made its way online.

“TOP GUN was re-mastered for the big screen from high-resolution original negative scans and painstakingly converted to 3D by Legend3D under the supervision of the film’s director, Tony Scott. Rendered in 3D, the film’s complex, long shots reveal extraordinary depth and clarity, allowing viewers to explore every detail of the action. From the spectacular aerial dogfights to the intense close-ups in the cockpits, each frame enables the audience to feel a part of the story.

The story of an elite group of pilots competing to be the best in their class and earn the title of “TOP GUN” captured the imagination of a generation and earned a worldwide box office of over $350 million upon its release.”

Cruise is of course joined by Anthony Edwards as Goose, with Kelly McGillis, Meg Ryan, Val Kilmer, Rick Rossovich, Tony Skerritt, and Tim Robbins completing the cast nicely.

The late Tony Scott is of course the man behind the camera here, who oversaw the film’s 3D conversion. Jim Cash and Jack Epps, Jr. are the men responsible for the script, both making their feature debuts as writers back in ’86.

Top Gun 3D will be released in US IMAX theatres for six days, from 8th – 13th February. (Though if it does extremely well, I wouldn’t rule out an extended engagement from Paramount in theatres.) It will then be released on Blu-ray 3D on 19th February. For now, here’s the film’s IMAX poster, with the young Cruise front and centre.
