In the 1990s, while he was still blossoming into the flower of National Treasure he is currently, Stephen Fry turned his attention to a series of novels. The Liar was published first, an account of a public schoolboy whose proficiency in the fibbing department opens up a marvellous fictional world of espionage. Fry also dabbled in alternate histories with Making History which maypoles itself around the moral chestnut – ‘If you could go back in time and kill Hitler, would you?’.

The Star’s Tennis Balls was a modern adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo and remains, thus far, Fry’s last novel to be published. Director John Jencks’ feature debut is an adaptation of Fry’s second novel The Hippopotamus.

Roger Allam leads the cast as an embittered poet who has aged disgracefully and who seeks solace at the bottom of the barrel with an old friend at his country house. There to surmise the veracity of claims that his friend’s son has powers of healing.

Blanche McIntyre and Tom Hodgson adapted the film and the cast include Matthew Modine, Tim McInnerny, Geraldine Somerville, Fiona Shaw and Emily Berrington.
