There’s nothing more annoying than finding a video on YouTube which has been shot vertically, but for some reason, Sony Pictures Animation decided it would be a good idea to release the first trailer for The Emoji Movie in that very format! The fact that it’s best viewed on a phone is certainly pretty novel, but for those who already don’t care about the movie, this is a decision which is unlikely to change their minds ahead of its release next year.

The teaser trailer features the voice of Steven Wright, and he will be playing Mel Meh, the father of T. J. Miller’s character, Gene. In The Emoji Movie, Gene, an emoji born with multiple expressions, teams up with his handy best friend Hi-5 and the notorious codebreaker Jailbreak on what’s described as an epic adventure through the apps on a teenager’s phone.

Interestingly, it has also been confirmed that apps like Candy Crush Saga, Dropbox, Instagram, Just Dance, Spotify, Twitter, and YouTube, Facebook, Shazam, and Snapchat will be part of the release as they’re treated like standalone worlds which come to life. That sounds very similar to Wreck-it Ralph’s approach to video games though, don’t you think?

It’s easy enough to be sceptical about The Emoji Movie, but it may have some potential. The problem is, it’s hard to say at this point, and this trailer doesn’t really come across as very exciting. We’ll have to wait and see, but both versions of the trailer can be viewed below.
