The-East-Teaser-PosterZal Batmanglij’s The East has officially had its world premiere at Sundance out in Park City, and the first reviews have been immensely promising for his follow-up to his debut last year, Sound of My Voice.

Fox Searchlight have already acquired the film’s distribution rights in North America, and now a fascinating first trailer has debuted over at Apple. Following up from the handful of images we’ve seen so far, it gives us an excellent first full look at the film.

“In THE EAST, Sarah Moss (Marling) is a brilliant operative for an elite private intelligence firm whose top objective is to ruthlessly protect the interests of their A-list corporate clientele. She is assigned to go undercover to infiltrate an anarchist collective known for executing covert attacks upon major corporations. Living amongst them in an effort to get closer to their members, Sarah finds herself unexpectedly torn between two worlds as she starts to fall in love with the group’s charismatic leader, finding her life and her priorities irrevocably changed.”

The East features an all-star cast, headed up by Alexander Skarsgård, Ellen Page, Brit Marling, Toby Kebbell, Patricia Clarkson, Julia Ormond, Shiloh Fernandez, and Aldis Hodge.

Batmanglij is once more directing from a script he co-wrote with Marling, and we’re hoping that the duo will continue to have a very successful partnership in the years to come.

The film has been one of my most anticipated of the year, and it’s great to see that it’s already doing well at Sundance. Here’s to hoping that its festival success will translate to the same in theatres later this year.

The East is screening out in Utah at Sundance, and I’m keeping my fingers tightly crossed that it will be coming to Sundance London this April. With Fox Searchlight already acquiring its North American rights, we should be seeing it arrive in theatres very soon. I can’t wait. Here’s the first trailer to give you an idea of what to expect. Enjoy.
