With the recent success of Senna, The Imposter and Searching for Sugar Man the feature length documentary appears to have acquired a welcome new lease of life and certainly a new audience.
The Battle of the Sexes tells the story of the famous 1973 tennis match between the Wimbledon’s womens champion Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. While the game stayed the same once the match was over change would be made on and off the court. Riggs had made some inflammatory comments, to the effect that he (now retired, and 55 years of age) could beat any women in the world at tennis, and up stepped Billie Jean King to dispute his claims.
James Erskine and Victoria Gregory’s film was announced in the 2013 programme for the Edinburgh Film Festival and opens across the country on the 26th of June.
