It was revealed not too long ago that a new TV show featuring The Muppets is in the works, a bid perhaps to capitalise on their past small screen success and to rejuvenate the franchise after the last disappointing film.

There’s been a lot of speculation about the the direction that this series will take, but the official synopsis sheds some light on The Muppets’ return to television and it probably isn’t what you expected: “The Muppets return to prime time with a contemporary, documentary-style show that—for the first time ever—will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, break-ups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires; a more adult Muppet show, for kids of all ages.”

The series will apparently be shot in a mockumentary style similar to TV shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation, an interesting decision which could see The Muppets fill the void left by both of those shows.

EW also reveals that series will be “more adult” in tone, and that it will poke fun at the kind of soap opera approach to storytelling that shows like Grey’s Anatomy take. This untitled Muppets project is only at the pilot stage as of right now, but there has been talk of ABC giving it a full series order, so they’re clearly confident in it potentially being a hit. What this means for their big screen adventures remains to be seen!
