Brit-Marling-and-Alexander-Skarsgard-in-The-EastZal Batmanglij’s return to Sundance this month with The East marks one of the most anticipated films premiering at the festival.

The writer-director made an acclaimed debut in Park City last year with Sound of My Voice, for which he is nominated at the upcoming Independent Spirit Awards for Best First Feature.

We saw a great new image of Ellen Page and Alexander Skarsgård in the upcoming film last week, and now a new image of Skarsgård and Brit Marling has debuted online, along with a hi-res version of last week’s new image.

“Someone is attacking big corporate CEOs and forcing them to consume harmful products they manufacture. An elite private intelligence firm is called into action and contracts ex-FBI agent Sarah Moss to infiltrate a mysterious anarchist collective, The East, suspected to be responsible. Skilled, focused, and bent on success, Sarah goes undercover and dedicates herself to taking down the organization. She soon finds, however, that the closer she gets to the action, the more she sympathizes with the group’s charismatic leaders.”

Starring alongside Skarsgård, Page, and Marling is an excellent cast, headed up by Toby Kebbell, Patricia Clarkson, Julia Ormond, Shiloh Fernandez, and Aldis Hodge.

Batmanglij is once more directing from a script he co-wrote with Brit Marling, with the duo solidifying an already promising partnership that will hopefully continue in the years to come.

The East will be premiering at Sundance later this month, and I’m really hoping that it will be coming shortly after to Sundance London. No word yet on a UK or US release date, but Fox Searchlight have the rights Stateside, and here’s to hoping it will be arriving on the big screen in a few months’ time. Most definitely a must-see film of the year.
