For a very long time now, there’s been a theory that The Joker in Suicide Squad isn’t the classic version of the Clown Prince of Crime, but is in fact Jason Todd. He’s the Robin whose defaced costume is on display in the Batcave, and many fans believe that it was Jason himself who scrawled that message on it as a way of taunting his former mentor.

The theory seems to stem from the fact that original Robin Dick Grayson returned as “The Joker” in The Dark Knight Returns sequel The Dark Knight Strikes Again, while Jason came back as a vigilante called The Red Hood after his apparent death at the hands of the villain.

Honestly, it’s a pretty flimsy suggestion, but as with most of these, it’s taken on a life of its own and many remain convinced that Jared Leto is playing Jason Todd as The Joker. Thankfully, Suicide Squad director David Ayer has finally debunked this idea once and for all.

Talking during a recent interview, the filmmaker looked at the camera and said, “It ain’t the case! He’s not!” This honestly isn’t at all surprising, though chances are this is a theory which won’t be put to bed until Suicide Squad is released on August 5th. It will be interesting to see if that movie sheds any light on what exactly the villain did to Jason Todd all those years ago.
