After the success Smallville had bringing the story of Superman to the small screen, Arrow is the latest TV series to take the long-form storytelling approach to a DC Comics superhero. Stephen Amell plays Oliver Queen, an egotistical billionaire playboy who returns home after five years stranded on a desert island, with a new set of skills and a reformed worldview. Armed with a bow and arrow and a sense for justice, he becomes the masked vigilante known to comic book fans as Green Arrow.

Arrow: Season 1 is released on DVD and Blu-ray on September 23, and we got the chance to sit down with its star Stephen Amell to ask him a few questions about the first season and what we can expect from the show going forward, taking in everything from John Barrowman to blonde facial hair along the way. The interview was recorded before the announcement that Season 2 of Arrow would introduce another famous superhero, The Flash, in a multi-episode arc, but you might spot a few hints being dropped here and there from Amell about Arrow’s spin-off potential and the introduction of new characters. It should be fun seeing that come to fruition when the series returns to Sky1 in the UK later this year.
