On its 50th day of release, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has passed the $900 million mark in North America. By grossing over $700 million, it beat Avatar’s record to become the highest grossing domestic release in history, so the movie reaching this milestone is huge.

However, even more incredible is the fact that it will become only the third movie in history to earn over $2 billion worldwide this Saturday (its 53rd day of global release). While the J.J. Abrams helmed release is unlikely to beat Titanic and most definitely won’t top Avatar’s haul, it could very well sail past the latter if Disney re-release it somewhere down the line.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens not being at #1 really doesn’t matter though as this first instalment in the new trilogy earing over $2 billion so quickly is historic and points to a bright future ahead for the franchise (Disney’s $4 billion investment was worth every penny).
