Zachary-Quinto-and-Chris-Pine-in-Star-Trek-Into-DarknessJ.J. Abrams will soon be returning to the sci-fi genre for which we all know and love him with the release of Star Trek Into Darkness this summer.

Paramount launched a brilliant Super Bowl TV spot over the weekend, giving us some great new footage to enjoy following December’s teaser trailer.

We’re counting down the weeks until the film arrives, and now EW have given us five new images, to help make that wait just a little bit easier.

“When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.”

Heading up the impressive cast for the sequel is Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Alice Eve, Bruce Greenwood, and Noel Clarke.

Abrams is directing from a script penned by co-writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek, Transformers) and Damon Lindelof (Prometheus).

Star Trek Into Darkness will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on 17th May in the UK and US. It’s sure to be one of the biggest films of the year, and you can bet that it’s going to have pretty much everyone talking come summer. For now, here are the latest images, including a shot of Abrams on the Star Trek Into Darkness set with Kurtzman.
