Samsung Solid State Hard DriveIt’s been a little while since we were asked to do a tech review of something but when Samsung offered us the chance to have a play with their new Solid State drives, we jumped at the chance. Solid State drives (SSD) have been around for a little while now but have always come with a hefty price-tag. More recently, process have been coming down swiftly and it’s the perfect time to start thinking about upgrading your current equipment to this new technology.

Solid State drives have huge advantage over traditional mechanical hard drives which doesn’t just end at speed. There are no moving parts in a solid state drive which means it doesn’t need to spin up to access the data and can therefore be delivered more quickly. Furthermore, since there are no moving parts, if you were to drop your laptop, it’s less likely to break than its predecessor.

To show just how easy it is to convert your old drive to the new, Samsung sent over a cable and a new hard drive (a Samsung SSD 840 Pro Series 512gb drive) for me to switch out my old drive and move to the new. I’ve filmed how I got on in the video below. I have to admit it’s not the most thrilling video we’ve ever made but it shows just how simple it is to get things moved over. The slowest part of the process is copying data but there’s  no need to sit and watch it. The most involved thing is switching out the drive but that is a very simple process if you have a screwdriver!

After the switch, my laptop is booting faster than ever and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to give solid state a try. If I can afford it, all my drives going forward will use this technology.

Check it out below and let us know if you’ve switched to an SSD drive over a traditional mechanical one and what you thought of it. You can find out more about the Samsnug SSD 840 range here or click here to buy one from Amazon.
