Here’s the teaser trailer for the third movie in the Smurfs franchise. It seems that after the first two there’s been a change in the cast guard with the likes of Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria (interviews below) & Katy Perry being replaced by Demi Lovato as Smurfette, Rainn Wilson as Gargamel, Joe Manganiello as Hefty, Jack McBrayer as Clumsy, Danny Pudi as Brainy and Mandy Patinkin as Papa Smurf. Not only that but the movie has switched from being live action with animated characters into a fully animated story.

Raja Gosnell (who directed both the first and second movies) comes in as executive producer on this production with Jordan Kerner back as Producer. Animation guru Kelly Asbury takes on the directing helm – his hugely impressive CV includes art department for Beauty and the Beast, The Prince of Egypt, The Little Mermaid and The Nightmare Before Christmas and he directed Shrek 2 and Gnomeo & Juliet.

The first Smurfs movie in 2011 was a monstrous success bringing in over half a billion $ at the worldwide box office. The second movie in 2013 didn’t do quite so well bringing in just over $300m but with that kind of profit, it’s not surprising a third film ins on the way.

The teaser trailer (embedded below) doesn’t really give too much away and for the first 10 seconds be warned that nothing happens bar a voice over but it’ll no doubt get kids excited to see their favourite blue characters returning to the big screen (unless of course they’re HUGE Avatar fans!).

In this fully animated, all-new take on the Smurfs, a mysterious map sets Smurfette and her best friends Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty on an exciting and thrilling race through the Forbidden Forest filled with magical creatures to find a mysterious lost village before the evil wizard Gargamel does. Embarking on a rollercoaster journey full of action and danger, the Smurfs are on a course that leads to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history!

Smurfs: The Lost Village is set for release 2017.
