Well, this is unexpected! It has been revealed this evening that Simon Pegg will co-write Star Trek 3, the third instalment of the rebooted franchise which recently found itself without a director and writer.

J.J. Abrams was originally set to direct the movie before departing for a Galaxy Far, Far Away, with Roberto Orci later stepping in to both pen the screenplay and helm the highly anticipated follow-up to Star Trek Into Darkness. He would later bail under mysterious circumstances though, leaving Star Trek 3 in a state of flux.

Since then, Fast & Furious helmer Justin Lin has boarded the project, helping Paramount to meet their 2016 release date (the year which will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the beloved Star Trek franchise).

Who Pegg is co-writing with isn’t clear at this point, but he has a great track records with credits for the likes of Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End. It seems likely now that Scotty will be getting a bigger role! Be sure to stay tuned to HeyUGuys as we’ll bring you more on this Star Trek story as it develops.

UPDATE: According to THR, Pegg will be co-writing Star Trek 3 alongside Doug Jung, the co-creator of Dark Blue and one of the writers on popular television drama series, Banshee. Quite an interesting match, eh?
