It was revealed late last week the that The Book of Eli’s Gary Whitta had left the Star Wars spinoff which is set to be released in 2016 upon completion of the first draft of the screenplay (details can be found here).

His departure appeared to be amicable, but we were all left wondering what this meant for the highly secretive movie which Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards is directing. After all, it’s expected to start shooting in Pinewood later this year, and as a new writer is apparently being looked for, they need to get a move on!

Well, according to a new report, Simon Kinberg will take over writing duties on the Star Wars spinoff.

A consultant on Star Wars: The Force Awakens and a writer and producer of the popular Disney XD animated series Star Wars Rebels, it makes sense for Kinberg to get involved as he is attached to another of the spinoff movies anyway (possibly the 2018 release being helmed by Josh Trank, but that hasn’t been confirmed).

Kinberg also wrote The Fantastic Four for Trank and is currently hard at work on X-Men: Apocalypse.

Rumour has it that the untitled Star Wars spinoff will focus on a group of bounty hunters hired by the Rebels to steal the plans of the first Death Star. Many believe that we’ll Boba Fett and Han Solo, but that remains more of a fan theory than anything else as of right now. How would you feel about Kinberg taking over?
