Steve Moffat

With plenty of casting announcements and Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank both set for upcoming Star Wars spin-offs, it’s been a while since we’ve had a good Star Wars rumour; even Rian Johnson’s involvement with Episode VIII comes from reliable enough sources to be considered all but confirmed.

The often very reliable Jedi-News have this morning run with the rumour that Doctor Who and Sherlock showrunner Steven Moffat is linked to one of the future Star Wars movies. With no indication of whether he would be involved as a writer, director or producer, and also no word if it was to work on Star Wars Episode IX or another of the planned spin-offs.

His fellow Doctor Who scribe Russell T Davies was offered a role in the now abandoned Star Wars Underworld live-action TV series, a project he famously declined when he refused to even meet with George Lucas. Moffat’s rumoured involvement apparently stems from his work on The Adventures of Tintin.

However, before we get too excited about this, the site describes it as a “wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey rumour”, and Moffat’s wife Sue Vertue took to Twitter shortly after to dismiss the news.

So ends a thankfully short lifespan for that rumour, talented as Moffat is it doesn’t seem possible that getting involved with a project on the scale of a Star Wars film a week after announcing a new Special and Series of Sherlock over the next two years is going to leave much time for a galaxy far, far away.

Anyway – it’ll be Matt Reeves next…
