Yep, that hot number you see below is in fact Hollywood’s favourite political and social activist, Sean Penn (thanks to Collider for the image).

The Robert Smith get-up is for a role in one of this year’s Cannes entries, This Must Be the Place. Penn co-stars with Frances McDormand and Eve Hewson (aka Bono Jr.)  in the first English-language film from acclaimed Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino (Il Divo, The Consequences of Love).

The official synopsis:

Cheyenne is a former rock star. At 50 he still dresses “Goth” and lives in Dublin off his royalties. The death of his father, with whom he wasn’t on speaking terms, brings him back to New York.

He discovers his father had an obsession: to seek revenge for a humiliation he had suffered. Cheyenne decides to pick up where his father left off, and starts a journey, at his own pace, across America.

The film is playing In Competition at this year’s festival, and you can see the competition it’s up against here.
