As well as critically acclaimed turns in smaller movies like Her and Under the Skin, Scarlett Johansson is making quite the name for herself as an action star. Not only is she Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Luc Besson’s Lucy grossed close to $400 million worldwide when it was released last year.

Well, the Avengers: Age of Ultron star has now signed up for yet another action franchise, as it has been revealed today that she will take on the lead role in the upcoming adaptation of Ghost in the Shell.

Dreamworks are adapting the Japanese anime/magna, and while it was reported at one point last year that Johansson had been offered a role, it is only now that she has agreed to star in Ghost in the Shell. Margot Robbie (who will be busy playing Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad) was also said to be in talks at one point.

According to the site that broke the news, Ghost in the Shell follows a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.

Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) is on board to direct, and the script was written by Bill Wheeler (The Reluctant Fundamentalist). Avi Arad and Steven Paul are producing the film. It should be interesting to see how Ghost in the Shell comes together, especially with Johansson set to star!
