Surprisingly, Ryan Gosling has emerged as the latest actor to be in the running for the role of Doctor Strange in the Marvel Studios movie which will be directed by Scott Derrickson. The actor has avoided big budget tentpoles over the years, but it looks like he could be about to make a big change if the deal goes down.

He’s not the only one in the running since Joaquin Phoenix dropped out of Doctor Strange negotiations.

As well as Ewan McGregor (Star Wars), Jake Gyllenhaal (Prisoners), Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club), Ethan Hawke (Sinister), Matthew McConaughey (True Detective), Justin Theroux (The Leftovers) and Keanu Reeves (The Matrix) have all been approached or are pursuing the role.

Another comic book franchise vying for Gosling’s attention is Suicide Squad, the upcoming DC Comics adaptation which will be directed by Fury’s David Ayer. Again, he’s not the only one being pursued!

Will Smith (Men in Black), Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) have all been approached for leading roles, but it’s said to still be very early days as the project is still in development and the script is being worked on. They’re clearly aiming for some A-List talent for this one!

Going back to Gosling, the actor (who was at one point said to be keen on starring in Green Lantern before dropping out after learning of sequel plans) is notoriously picky and could be a long way off starring in a big budget blockbuster anytime soon. He seems like great fit for Doctor Strange though, so we’ll see…
