Rio took almost half a billion dollars for Blue Sky Studios back in 2011, and launched their first franchise outside of the Ice Age series. Needless to say, things are looking excellent for their sequel next year, Rio 2.
Currently slated for release in April 2014, the animated comedy-musical will see the original leading cast reprising their roles for the follow-up, alongside a host of brilliant new voices. And whilst we still might be ways out from its theatrical release date, we all know how fast time flies (bird-related pun only partially intended). And thus we arrive at this great first Rio 2 teaser trailer!
Blu, Jewel, and their three kids live the perfect domesticated life in the magical city. When Jewel decides the kids need to learn to live like real birds, she insists the family venture into the Amazon. As Blu tries to fit in with his new neighbors, he worries he may lose Jewel and the kids to the call of the wild.
Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway are back as leading Macaws Blu and Jewel. And leading the voice cast alongside them are Leslie Mann, Jemaine Clement, Jamie Foxx, George Lopez, will.i.am, Rodrigo Santoro, Tracy Morgan, Bebel Gilberto, Jake T. Austin, Andy Garcia, Bruno Mars, Kristin Chenoweth, Rita Moreno, Amanda Stenberg, Rachel Crow, Janelle Monáe, Pierce Gagnon, and Natalie Morales.
Carlos Saldanha is in the director’s chair once more for the animated blockbuster. And he’s working from a story he co-wrote with the late Don Rhymer, who co-wrote the original film, and sadly died whilst co-writing the sequel.
Rio 2 is set to be released in 3D on 4th April, 2014 here in the UK, following a week later in the US with its release date set for April 11th. Whilst we count down the months, here’s the first teaser trailer to get you back in the mood.
