There was a rather sombre atmosphere in the room during our interview with British actress Rebecca Hall, for the film she’s promoting, Christine, tells a tragic tale, and it’s a character that evidently meant a lot, and had a big impact on the actress.

Rebecca Hall - ChristineBased entirely on real events, about Christine Chubbuck, a television news reporter struggling from depression in 1974, Hall told us whether it’s a story she knew anything about before signing up to the Antonio Campos project. Hall, who is unfortunate to have been awarded with an Oscar nomination for this performance, proceeds to discuss the state of modern journalism and how she related it to the feature, and just how difficult she found it after a day’s shoot to shake off the role.

Synopsis

In Sarasota, Fla., circa 1974, an ambitious, 29-year-old reporter is relentlessly motivated to succeed. She knows she has talent, but being a driven career woman in the ’70s comes with its own challenges, especially when competition for a promotion and a tumultuous home life lead to a dissolution of self. With ratings in the cellar, the station manager issues a mandate to deliver juicier and more exploitative stories, a story firmly at odds with her serious brand of issue-based journalism.

Christine is released on January 27th. You can read our review here.
