An R-Rated fan film recently made headlines, but an official Power Rangers reboot is also in the works from Saban Brands. That one will be a little more family friendly, and may have now found a director.

Project Almanac (which has a score of only 35% on Rotten Tomatoes, but scored a fairly positive 3* review here on HeyUGuys) director Dean Israelite is apparently in negotiations to tackle the big screen reboot which was written by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz. Their credits include X-Men: First Class and Thor, though their contributions to both were minor. Matthew Vaughn actually wasn’t happy about them getting a mention!

Regardless, this remake is now finally moving ahead and that should make fans of the Power Rangers franchise very happy. After debuting in 1993, they’ve remained a constant on TV and made the leap to the big screen in 1995. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie earned a so so $66.4 million upon release.

Lionsgate are hoping that this 2016 reboot will be the first instalment of a new franchise. It should be interesting to see the Power Rangers get a modern day makeover in a movie, but it’s hard to say whether the demand is their from those who aren’t longtime fans of the TV show. After all, the second movie only earned $10 million worldwide, so it has to be considered something of a risk. We’ll just have to wait and see!
