Andy-Serkis-as-Caesar-in-Dawn-of-the-Planet-of-the-ApesFollowing quickly on the heels of news that director Matt Reeves has signed on to helm the as-yet-untitled Planet of the Apes sequel, Fox has announced that the third instalment in the rebooted franchise will be hitting cinemas on July 29th, 2016.

Reeves of course came on board to helm this summer’s blockbuster sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which will be heading into theatres in July this year.

He’ll be directing this next instalment from a script he’s set to co-write with Mark Bomback (The Wolverine, Unstoppable).

The Apes series has becoming a very promising franchise for the studio in recent years, with Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes rebooting the original movies to the tune of almost half a billion dollars at the global box office, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes expected to do very well this summer.

The studio doesn’t have quite as many franchises in its pocket as some of its competitors, with Taken, Ice Age, and the X-Men films standing out most alongside Apes.

Fox is also set to release the upcoming Independence Day sequel as well as Ice Age 5 in July 2016, along with X-Men: Apocalypse and How to Train Your Dragon 3 in May and June, building a very busy few months for the studio’s blockbuster season, provided some of these dates don’t change.
