2010’s Toy Story 3 was the perfect way to end the trilogy which began in 1995, but its success meant that the news of a fourth instalment last year didn’t really come as too much of a surprise (especially as a number of shorts both on television and in front of other Disney movies have helped to keep the franchise going).

It’s not clear what Toy Story 4 will be about or whether it will bring back fan-favourite characters like Woody and Buzz Lightyear, but it’s hard to imagine them now somehow factoring into this new movie somehow.

Regardless, it won’t be returning to the relationship between the toys and the now college aged Andy. It also won’t concentrate on Bonnie (the youngster introduced at the end of Toy Story 3), and the spotlight will instead squarely be on the toys and a story revolving around them according to Pixar president Jim Morris.

“In temperament it is, but it will be a love story,” he revealed in a recent interview. “It will be a romantic comedy. It will not put much focus on the interaction between the characters and children.” As for claims Toy Story 4 is just a money grab: “That’s not what it’s about. It’s about an idea that is met with enthusiasm.”

Toy Story and Toy Story 2 director John Lasseter looks set to helm the movie, while Rashida Jones and Will McCormack are writing the script. Toy Story is currently set to be released on June 16th, 2017.
