It has been announced today that The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are taking Spider-Man back to his graphic roots with a first of its kind animated Spider-Man feature. The news was made official by Tom Rothman at CinemaCon, and the Sony boss also confirmed that it will be released on July 20th, 2018.

The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, “all of which are continuing” according to the press release. Does that mean we’re still getting all of those terrible sounding spinoffs like Sinister Six? Hopefully not, especially now that Marvel Studios are in control of the character.

As previously announced, Spider-Man will next appear in a live-action Marvel film from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (Captain America: Civil War), and Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next instalment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, a live-action film being produced by Kevin Feige at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. That’s in very good hands!

The animated film from Lord & Miller, has Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Pascal also serving as producers.

Lord and Miller aren’t attached to direct just yet, and this project can now be added to a very long list of projects the duo are either officially attached to or rumoured to be involved with. Those include The LEGO Movie Sequel, The Flash, and that fun sounding Jump Street/Men in Black sequel we heard about last year.
