Pacific-Rim-Poster-ExtinctGuillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim promises to bring action on a scale unlike most of its fellow summer blockbuster fare, and we have a good feeling that it will live up to its ‘Go Big or Go Extinct’ slogan nicely.

There’s already been talk of a sequel, months ahead of its release in cinemas, and the positive word is already abuzz for del Toro’s return behind the camera.

Following the great new featurette we saw last week, delving into some of the sci-fi tech developed within the world of the movie, Warner Bros. have released an action-packed new 30-second TV spot to help fuel our anticipation.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes–a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)–who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rob Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman lead a terrific cast.

Del Toro is directing for the first time since Hellboy II, and he’s directing from a script he co-wrote with Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans).

Pacific Rim will be hitting cinemas in 3D and IMAX 3D on July 12th in the US and UK, and hitting hard. This is one of a handful of must-see movies of the year, with a hefty potential to be an epic new franchise for all concerned.
