Pacific-Rim-Poster-ExtinctPacific Rim is just over two and a half weeks away from hitting the big screen, and things couldn’t be looking much better for Guillermo del Toro’s return behind the camera.

We last saw the director in the chair for 2008’s Hellboy II, and it looks like he hasn’t skipped a beat in the intervening years, with Pacific Rim shaping up to be one of the best blockbusters of the summer season.

Earlier in the month, we were treated to an action-packed new TV spot. And now Warner Bros. have released another thirty-second spot, featuring a handful of brilliant little sound bites to whet the appetite.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes–a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)–who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, and Idris Elba will be our leading trio for the film, with a great cast starring alongside them, led by Charlie Day, Rob Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman.

Del Toro is directing from a script he co-wrote with Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans). And with talk of a sequel already underway, it looks like Warner Bros. have got a mammoth new franchise on their hands for the years to come.

Pacific Rim will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on July 12th in the US and UK, which thankfully gives us just a few short weeks until it lands at the multiplex. This is guaranteed to be awesome. 2,500 tonnes of awesome, to be precise.
